You Know, Like Us

I was speaking with my son the other day

He was talking about a friend,

And that boy’s relationship with his dad.

He was saying how great this father and son’s relationship was

How they laughed and joked

And took it to the next level,

And then he added,

“You know, like us.”

I don’t think he realized what he said.

It came out naturally

Part of the norm, the way it is.

But I heard it and smiled.

From inside and out.

It was a moment you rarely see

But probably should always know.

Your kids care

They appreciate you.

They understand the sacrifice.

They don’t always know how to say it

But what I heard was,

“Thanks, you’re a really good dad”
