Snapshots

I had a really fun evening last night

With a friend

Who stokes a fire

Somewhere deep inside my core

It ended kind of sad for me

But only because

I received what I always ask for

Honesty and a chance

But before all that-

My friend really made an effort

To make the evening happen

And that alone made me smile

Our night included a surprise guest

A friend of hers

Who happened to be where we landed

And who came along for the ride

And it was a fun ride

We laughed and giggled

Traded stories about this and that

And the night just flew by

It all seemed so easy

And so really nice

Just a summer breeze

On a beautiful summer night

To my surprise

What turned out to be most interesting

Were a series of snapshots

Taken spontaneously

That only I have the luxury of seeing

After our bottle of wine

And somewhere just before

Or after dessert

We all crammed into one side of our booth

We posed for a series of selfies

My friend, our guest and our host

The patio manager

Who had become a friendly part of the evening

We ended up shooting a whole bunch of pictures

Because in the middle

We had to reset ourselves

My friend reminded me

Of my thoughts about her good side

And since we were misaligned-

We scurried about until we got it right

She takes a beautiful picture

And these were no exception

The pictures turned out kind of grainy

Because we didn’t exactly get the light right

So they aren’t ones you would normally show off

But for me they held something special

It was captured in a moment

Actually more than a moment

It lasted

As many times as I hit the shutter

In the pictures

You see the four of us

Big smiles

Clearly having fun

But as I looked more closely

Just at my friend and myself

I saw so much more

So much of what I miss

We’re just there

Her hand on my shoulder

Close to each other

Smiling

And that’s it

Just that moment

Relaxed

Spontaneous

Happy

To me it was magic

A moment that could sum it all up

The finding that place

Where it all seems so fine

I’m glad that I captured it

Because in the end

Although a picture can say

A thousand words

All the words are ones you project upon it

And that brought me to sad

Because it was all just an illusion

Crafted in my mind

To fill the empty space in my heart

You see

My friend and I aren’t really there

We aren’t really anywhere-

She’s just a good friend

Who projects a wonderful smile

So as I left the happy evening

Heading down the road

Sad but satisfied

I began to reflect on it all

That the night was real

And the fun was real

Our time together was real

But the moment wasn’t-

Or was it?
