Steven
I visited my friend recently,
Just for a moment
A lazy Sunday,
But a busy time.
She invited me in
And then stepped away-
Her son lounged on the sofa
Watching nothing special on the tube.
It was one of those moments.
A kind of defining moment,
And it’s stayed with me for a while.
On a Sunday sofa morning,
When I was introduced
Most 16 year olds would wave or nod,
My friend’s son was different.
He became animated.
Got up off the couch,
Stepped around and shook my hand.
Firmly, with eye contact.
He showed a genuine interest in his mother’s guest.
Truly a gentleman.
He reflected my friend.
He was raised properly.
He knew respect and kindness.
I won’t soon forget that.
I met the rest of her family that day,
All very nice and kind,
But I learned the most from Steven.
