The Family Spread

So here’s one

That took me to a different place

It was quite unexpected

And most fascinating

I was out with a doll

A friend

Who is cute

But quite demur at the same time

So sometimes it’s a challenge

To go deep

And find those things

That hide behind her eyes

Well we hit one tonight

And it really took me by surprise

Because what we talked about

Was family

But not in the way you’d expect

This was about an extended family

The one that comes with a relationship

The other side of the equation

And what I found

The thing that really caught me off guard

Was the thought that getting too close

Can be a third rail

And I had never really considered that

That spreading one’s happiness

Beyond your significant other

Could risk it all

But what I found

Is there’s a chance for a disconnect

That the good things shared with extended family

May be too much for your mate

So I paused

And considered that

And to some degree

It made some sense

I’ve always been the one

Who folks seem to like

Maybe its because I’m curious

Or maybe just because

I’ve never really asked

If that was a bother

I never thought it could be

Until tonight

Now I’ve been enlightened

To find the focus is always on one

And the spotlight

Should shine brightest on her

It doesn’t mean you can’t spread the love

Just be sure you’ve filled the special heart
