Moments

A deer ran into my car last night

Not big damage

More of a bummer

Since he knocked the shell of my mirror off

He didn’t seem too bothered by it all

He just kept cruising right along

Big head-hard head

Big horns

But it got me thinking about the almost-

How close this guy came to wrecking me

And another wreck I was witness to

Not so long ago

Like last night I was chatting away

It was a February afternoon

One of the cold ones

Where the snow had just fallen

Driving home I came to a stop

On a hill behind a couple cars

Just waiting my turn

Talking on the phone

Next thing I see

The guy in front of me

Has clipped a guy turning next to me

And he’s turning over

Yes he’s on his side rolling toward me

Well of course I excuse myself from the call

And pull ahead so as not be collateral damage

Whew that was close

So as I jumped on top of this guy’s car

Prying open the door

So he can climb out like an astronaut

I’m thinking, well that could have been ugly

Just like last night

It was close-

I lost a little body trim

But I didn’t kill a deer-

And he didn’t kill me

And sometimes that’s how close you come

To having everything change in a moment-

And I’m thankful that nothing changed

Because things are a-ok just the way they are
