Lucky Guy

Dinner tonight

Continued my week long experience

Of improbable connections

Not since the extinction of the dinosaurs

Have more worlds collided

I mean we are talking about things

Occurring on an epic level

From this one dumped that one

And being on both sides

To this one married that one

And now married this one

I mean it’s just been a whirlwind

So not unexpected

But equally surprising

Came our latest thriller

Tonight’s episode-

“The Set Up”

I’m dining with two

Of my more favorite friends

From the opposite gender-

The smarter sex as I’ve been told

And they’re chatting it up about their latest dates.

This guy is this

That guy is that

And I’m just taking it all in

Enjoying a mojito

On a nice summer’s night

On the patio

Where the beautiful people dine

At some point as they are comparing notes

They realize they are comparing notes on the same guy

Improbable yes

Impossible no.

Well one of my friends is going out with this Lucky Guy

Tomorrow night

And all of a sudden he doesn’t look so hot

I mean he’s toast

Unless he passes the test

A very harsh test

That I was totally against

But was out voted

And thus I decided to watch the carnage unfold

Friend A, the one with the date the next night

Gets friend B, the one who’s had some dialogue

To text Lucky Guy and see what’s he’s up to

Like, is he around tomorrow night?

Now I’m one for some fun

But this was right up to the line

This was a real challenge

And if Lucky Guy was going to survive

He was going to need to be one cool dude.

The probability that these two friends

Would even be together was a million to one shot

But they were both friends of mine from different worlds

So I got them together

Not knowing that the worlds I unleashed

Were on an epic collision path around the sun

Actually more like around our table

Where the food was great and the drama greater

So the text goes out from Friend B

And Lucky Guy writes back

Nothing too committal

Lucky Guy can’t make it tomorrow

He has a party

But maybe the next day

Whatever works

But Friend A with the date goes nuclear

It’s done

He’s over

No date

No time

No nada

Now let me insert some guy speak here

Lucky Guy did nothing wrong

He’s being affable with a pretty lady who reached out

He doesn’t know that his date is right there

But boy is he about to find out

Because his phone blows up

As Friend A announces her presence

And that hello-

She’s pissed

Now imagine this guy is now getting texts

From two women simultaneously

On his phone

Probably trying just to figure out who’s who

And what’s what

And now the flames fly

Like meteors streaking through the sky

Their tails sparking against the midnight moon

The texts from our table could have powered the whole restaurant

Fifteen minutes of flame-o-grams ensue

But then a funny thing happened

Friend A and Lucky Guy decide they really do like each other

And as the fire subsides

I promote the idea of meeting him up the road for a nightcap

Grab a drink

We can all meet

And see how it goes from there

So we pile into my car

And head up the road to meet Lucky Guy

Now he’s been out with Friend A

But has never met Friend B

They’ve just corresponded

Well sure enough

He shows

And after a brief private conversation with Friend A

And a nice to meet you to Friend B

The grades were in

A bit overwhelmed

And still a little shell-shocked

We all raised a shot

And toasted his success

You see he was cool

And he passed the test

So the date is on

Even if there isn’t really a party

As worlds continue to collide
