Day 4
The second hand sweeps
Across the face of the clock
Midnight plus a second
As Day 4 begins at the Spa
Not a health spa
Or a fabulous retreat
But rather a first class hospital
In Wynnewood PA
I’m on an unintended a journey
A journey of patience
Of thought and reflection
And of planning for the future
There’s time for all of that here
That’s for sure
Because time moves at casino speed
No day – No night – Just time
This is a classic case of you just never know
And I find myself incarcerated
In a private hospital room
Where visitors must adorn robes and gloves just to visit
Aside from that set up I’m pretty lucky
Because I feel fine
I just have a very nasty superbug
That needs to be evicted from its current residence
Surgeons, Internists, Infectious Diseases Teams converge
It’s like a SWAT team of medicine
And they coordinate an attack
Crushing the superbug for my situation
And so far it’s working
With powerful medicine
And very fast analysis
The teams are able to modify regimens very quickly
It’s the face of new medicine
Something you really only see
When you’re in the bed
Taking the service
And as with every journey
You find interesting friends along the way
A couple’s daughter
Who showed up on the surgical team
Another doctor
Stopping by to say good luck
Before heading to Maynard’s in Margate for July 4th
Did I mention how young new medicine has become?
There are nurses who are incredible
Sharp and efficient and extremely kind
Friends and family who have checked in
With prayers, support and visits
All focused on me and my well-being
And that’s where the real thought has begun
Because up until now I’ve been able to handle my life
Without an assist
I have gone it alone and made my way just fine
But this time was different
Because this time it was serious
And I exhausted myself trying to manage myself
And that was something I hadn’t faced before
And when I finally decided to reach out for help
I did it in time
With little to spare
But the help was spot on and the improvement was dramatic
I was lucky
I found someone who really knew what they were doing
Because they gave me the right treatment
At the right time
But my change is profound
And with all that has come before
I have really gotten to ground zero
To understand what matters and with whom
You can read things I written before
About times and travels
Friends and lovers
And a life well lived
Well when you’re in the Spa –
Not the fancy one on the island
But the hospital one
Down the street from where you live
The life well lived has a whole new meaning
At least it does for me
And I know more now than I ever did before
That this journey has meaning
And it started before last Thursday
And I know what I need to do
To get to the end
So I can really say
I have a life that is completely well lived
