The Eighth Grade Dance

Lately

A bunch of my friends

All of the smarter sex

Seem to have found the guys of their dreams

Over the moon

Is how I would describe it

They’re smiling and laughing

And really enjoying their new found romances

To me

Its seems a bit like

The eighth grade dance

The one where we’d all line up

Girls over there

Guys over here

And over the course of the night

We’d meet up and dance

Maybe smooch a little in the dark

And leave holding hands

All set for whatever comes next

For however long it lasts-

Because in eighth grade

A week is a lifetime

But now

A week is just a week

And relationships and romance

Are measured in months and years

And the work that’s involved

Is lost on an eighth grader

But not on you and me

Because what’s really worth it

Is worth the effort

And that’s what you learn

Many years past eighth grade

One of my friends

Said she never thought

She’d get the chance to really love

To find someone

Who took her to the places she only dreamed about

I guess that place

Is somewhere over the moon

So to all my friends

Who find themselves on the rocket ship ride to love

I hope all their trips are special

And last a lifetime and beyond
