Sometimes It Shows
I was having dinner with a friend recently.
We were talking about the old days and the happier things we had experienced.
He was dealing with a tragedy at the time.
It seems those are the time when we reflect the most.
Odd that we wait for sadness to find happiness.
Maybe we should spend more time on the happy every day.
We were talking about friends and laughed.
I mentioned that I had recently reconnected with an old friend.
Without missing a beat he mentioned her name and asked how she was.
I was stunned.
I hadn’t mentioned this person in years.
I looked around, trying to capture a peak in the mirror in the restaurant to see if it was written on my face.
I said she was fine and had asked that I say hi to him.
He was pleased and started onto other topics.
I couldn’t let it go though.
I asked how he knew.
He said it was the way I asked.
It was a tell
Like at a poker table.
He knew.
He’s a very good poker player.
We moved onto other topics, happy and sad.
But the moment didn’t leave me.
I usually never let my guard down.
But I had.
He had seen right into me.
The wall is coming down.
I hope it leads to happy.
