90 Miles an Hour
I’m late
Overslept
Got to get the kids to school
Find some clothes
Out the door
Catch a break, the light is green
Must be fate
A helping hand unseen
“Where are you?”
5 minutes away
Pack your stuff
And we’re on our way
Down the road at breakneck speed
Classes start in 33.
On open road
We pass some cars
A moment later
A wreck
It’s not our car
We missed by yards
They hit the road, across the line
The kids inside are spooked but fine
Up a hill and down a fence
A moment in time, very intense.
Onward with luck
Looks like the day
Will soon show us
A better way
Over the bridge
The steam appears
This isn’t real
My truck has tears.
Pressing on
To get to class
The heat is building
My truck’s last gasp
She finally dies
On 30 in Wayne
In front of the garage
I reached in vain.
And that’s the day
And it’s not that old
If this was poker
I’d have to fold.
