A Very Rich Day

Some days just happen

When you go with the flow

And today was one of them

A very rich one indeed

I have this old new friend

Or is it new old friend

I don’t know-

But either way, a friend from long ago

Who reconnected and came to town

I was the designated driver

And best pal of the day

Steering my friend around town

From here to there

Her motor runs at 100 mph standing still

And that’s important to know

Because part of what made today so rich

Was the just do it attitude

Possessed by my very adorable friend

After scooping her up at the airport

Our first stop was the farmer’s market

Not really an important note-

Except that she’s a muffin junkie

Just like a number of my friends

Then it was off to a coffee shop

Where she held court with one of her local friends

Who lived nearby and dropped in for a catch up

Not an amazing fact

Except that her catch up friend at one time had a boyfriend

Who happened to be a very dear friend of a mutual friend of both of us

Now that doesn’t seem so special

Except you need to know that her boyfriend

Was terribly injured in an accident

That eventually cut his life short

Our mutual friend - to this day

Remembers catch up friend’s boyfriend

By holding a fund raiser each year in his memory

Raising money for their school and outreach on teen issues

It was an interesting connect

And completely unexpected

The first of many of the day

As worlds collided and new friendships were made

Next stop was to visit another local friend

A guy who’s had a difficult go

But who has a spirit like no other

And a zest for living from which we could all take a lesson

Their relationship dated back to high school

Where she was the popular girl

And he was a kid just struggling to get through school

He had medical challenges and was withdrawn

She made it her point to include him in her life

Trust me, he’s no wallflower

And although he had very difficult issues

He also graduated Harvard – not much else needs to be said there

Her appearance brightened his day

Probably his week, if not his month

He regaled us with stories of his latest exploits

His new girlfriend and all the things that were going his way

He was intriguing and genuine and real

And never spent a moment

Looking back saying what if

We stayed for a while

But then it was time to move on

Spreading joy is my friend’s goal in life

There was plenty of joy left with David

Next we rolled into the old neighborhood

As a matter of fact we rolled right up to an old family house

In the driveway rolled up

And took some snaps

A moment of nostalgia

Followed by stories of the days gone by

It was sweet and a bit melancholy

Because time moves on for all of us

Our final stop

Was her residence for the evening

A beautiful home

That her oldest friend lived in with her family

Now apart from the tasty Chinese food for dinner

Or the discussion of the long list of mutual friends and family

The real treat of the night

Was a jam session hosted by the man of the house

Oh the man of the house you say

Well you may think that was our host

Or his two buddies that joined us for dinner

And the sweet guitars they produced to play

But no

The man of the house was 15 years old

A kid who can really rock an axe

He took the the crew to places they hadn’t been

For a very long time

He played like it was nothing

A 15-year-old virtuoso

Who simultaneously spied his iphone for messages

While covering classic rock and blues songs

With skill usually found in ones much older

A dad and his son

Playing tunes in a band

With guys his dad used to play with

When they were all fifteen

It was all very cool

And quite unexpected

As was most of the day-

A very rich day indeed
