Dodge Ball

When we were kids

We played a game

Called dodge ball

You know

The one where someone would stand across from you

And try and hit you

With a big rubber ball

If they hit you

You were out

And you had to go stand on the sidelines

Until the next game began

Grown ups seem to play the same game

But it’s a little trickier

Because it’s not a big rubber ball being whipped around

But rather an emotional tidal wave

And dodging the wave

Can be a game in itself

Full of intrigue and subplots

With designs of a life and things to come

When expertly played

Dodge ball – the adult version

Can be fulfilling or frustrating

Glorious or empty

And the players know the rules

Unless the rules are changed

In the middle of the game

Which is fully expected - of course

In dodge ball – the adult version

The smarter sex makes the rules

And we just follow

Trying not to be wiped out by the wave
