The Guitar
My son,
The musical one
Had been saving and working us,
So he could buy a Gibson SG, THE guitar.
Great deal,
Big tunes
The rockin’ six string for the fourteen year old set.
Working hard, he saved and bought the guitar.
Got his mom to pitch in.
Borrowed from his brother,
Really made the deal happen.
He was very happy with his new axe.
Inspired, he wrote songs and played.
It all seemed like a nice end to a good story.
What I didn’t know.
What his mom didn’t know
What only he knew,
Was what the real story was.
Yes he had worked hard and really enjoyed instrument.
But he didn’t get it for himself.
He had gone to the trouble to work, save and hustle
Just so he could give it away.
The untold story, the thing only he knew
Was that he was doing this for a friend.
A friend who he had known for years
A friend who he admired
A friend who was having a tough go,
A friend who could really rock out.
Without fanfare
By just showing up,
My son gave his friend THE guitar.
Just a few friends around,
After jamming together,
“Here it’s yours.”
I don’t think he can fully understand the impact today,
The true selfless act of compassion
The true caring for a friend,
But it’s nice to see,
He’s headed down the right path
The returns should be rich and fulfilling for a lifetime.
