Overheard

I was with an old lover the other day

She was fielding calls from new suitors

An interesting interlude to the day

Just listening in on conversations

The first call was with one she hoped might be a possibility

Coy dialogue

A smile to her speech and to her face

You could feel the anticipation

The hope

I had experienced that with her

I had been on the other end of the call

You could almost feel the passion

The wanting and hoping

I smiled to myself

Thinking that she was still in the game

Working it

And succeeding

The second call was with a recent lover

He had been the flame du jour

A sweet boy, so I’m told

But a boy none the less

That call was much more direct

You need this

I have that

You should go here,

I’ll get that for you there.

It was a much more familiar conversation

Comfortable and knowing

But it again made me smile

For that too was a conversation we had

And thus I saw the arc of the romance

From wanting and hoping

To daily grind of just getting along

We ended our time together

She was off to the newest gentleman

Worrying about what to wear

And how to impress

I’m sure both will be happy with the girl they find

But only one can win.
